«Documentary Filmmaking: Empowering Vulnerabilities»
Many of the narratives in documentary films made by women have an essential affective nature. In my work I generally explore marginalized subjects in Cuba. My aesthetic decisions inspire a sense of both individual and communal memory in my films and highlight the authorial stance of the final audiovisual project. My tendency towards self-reflection and individuals facing extreme circumstances, create a sense of intimacy that could potentially connect any viewer, anywhere, to the stories I tell. I believe this display of peoples vulnerabilities on screen – as a form of cleansing, sharing and exorcising – is also an empowering tool to face the experiences of introspection, discrimination, displacement and adjustment lived in the diaspora.
